What products do you find are just as good in generic form versus buying name brand? I love to save money whenever I can but there are just some generic products that aren't made as well.

Let's use this as a place to share experiences/recommendations for buying generic

I buy a lot of generics.  It helps way more than couponing did for us!

    I use generic:

    dried/canned beans

    frozen veggies

    bread

    milk

    cheese

Really if there's a choice between store brand and name brand, I'll almost always choose the store brand except for ketchup.  Shredded Wheat -- I don't like the store brand so I buy the Malt-o-Meal which is a lot cheaper than the name brand.

I wish that there were more healthful and organic options in the generics!  Frozen waffles, for instance -- I buy the whole wheat variety since my kids eat them, guaranteed (they won't TOUCH my homemade pancakes -- hrmph!!!), and one small box of that is the same price as a mega-ultra-jumbo pack of the store brand.

we try to buy generic anything.  unless the name brand is on sale for cheaper of course.  i find that most generics taste the same or are better than the brand names too.  in addition to that we go to costco where we buy in bulk.  i'm not sure if that's cheaper than shopping at the regular grocery store but it sure does cut down the trips needed.  we also keep a very well stocked pantry of canned goods, dry items like pasta, cereals, grains, plus juice, condiments, and paper products.  we do one big costco run a month and we do a giant eagle run usually at the same time.  then we fill in the rest of the month at our little local grocery for fresh fruits and veggies and lunch meat, milk, bread and so on, you know, the stuff you run out of through out the month.

i'm pretty sure that our monthly food budget is about 350 - 400.

I will buy a lot of generic stuff but I am a peanut butter snob (has to be Jif and nothing else) and toilet paper has to be Scott.  Almost everything else I will buy generic if possible.  Oh and I bought generic spaghetti sauce a couple of weeks ago that was terrible so no more of that (I kept adding spices and it never got any better).  I so wish I had the room to buy in bulk to eliminate some trips but we would have no where to keep it all.

Hi Heather. My husband and I love salsa and chips, but I couldn't find a reasonably priced one that also tasted good. I then turned to the organic one from Giant Eagle; it's so good in fact that my four-year old daughter eats it. She never liked salsa before this, not even the homemade ones. As for other generics, I sometimes shop at Aldi markets and have found their canned goods just as tasty as name-brand ones. Hope this helps!
