My surgery is one week from today. One week! I know I've been posting a lot lately about my fears. I do think they're valid fears, valid enough that they may stop some people from moving forward, but not me. I have to say, my fears really pale in comparison to my excitement.
I know this is the right thing for me and I'm really just very, very excited. I will have plenty of help (my mom has generously offered to come for a week to help), the kids will love the extra Grandma and Daddy time and will NOT be scarred for life, my husband will get over his fear of blood (well, this one is iffy) and I'll do just fine. I'll take it easy, order Thanksgiving dinner out, go back to work after 10 days and be back to myself quickly. I've got no fears about that.
I look at my belly each and every night and try to imagine myself in one week when it's not there anymore. The belly that has tortured me my entire adult life. My nemesis. I'm the superhero and it's my evil enemy. And, like most movies, I will destroy my enemy at the end of this story (some people might cast the doctor as the superhero, but I disagree, I’m the hero, he’s just my weapon). I'm not just taking off some skin, I'm changing the one thing that has caused me more humiliation, stress and negative self image more than anything else in my entire life. That's huge. And I'm excited.
One week from today I will conquer my demons, armed with a scalpel.
