Sacrificial coffee cups

I bought my husband and new coffee cup today. A shiny double-walled  stainless steel one from Starbucks that will keep his coffee hot for hours. He deserves it.  Let me tell you the story.

A week or so ago Mike was with the kids and was taking them from one soccer game to another. Unfortunately, they got stuck on Route 28 when they had it completely closed for construction.

Of course, as they were sitting in standstill car in park traffic guess what happened?

You guessed it, both boys decided that they needed to go to the bathroom. Right then. No way, no how could they make it to the exit. (Isn't that always how it happens?)

A little backstory:  Mike is extremely protective of his car. He doesn't like anything to mess it up it or scratch it. We are not allowed to place cups or other items on the trunk of the car, wash the car ourselves  (he has his own special way and we're not allowed to help) or eat or drink in the car.   (He's an engineer...surprised?)

So as you can imagine, my poor husband panicked. The thought of them peeing in his car was horrifying to him.  He didn't want them to have an accident, but the traffic wasn't moving anytime soon. So he did the only thing a good father could do. He looked around the car for anything all all they could pee in. Of course he keeps his car sparkling clean, so there was nothing. Nothing but his nice fancy coffee cup.  So he did it.  He sacrificed his coffee cup for the cause.

When he told me the story I couldn't stop laughing. He was so distraught about the state of his coffee cup . And he's very frugal so he didn't want to buy a new one. He ran it through the dishwasher several times and every time he would take a look at it and get this sad look on his face realizing that he just really could couldn't drink out of it ever again. After about the fourth wash he threw it in the garbage.

He won't spend the money on himself to get a new mug so he is been using our pink plastic Disney mugs ever since.

So today I'm declaring "good father" day and I went to Starbucks and bought him a new mug.

I have a feeling he won't be taking it to soccer with him tomorrow :-)
